Post-operative bleeding after a procedure<\/h3>\n

Slight post-operative bleeding is normal \u2013 here is how to stop it.<\/p>\n

\n

01<\/span><\/p>\n

Stay upright.<\/span> Sit down calmly and keep your head elevated \u2013 even when lying down. Do not lie down with your head flat. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

02<\/span><\/p>\n

Apply pressure.<\/span> Bite down firmly on a sterile compress or a clean, rolled-up cloth handkerchief for 30 minutes. Do not use cotton wool or paper tissues. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

03<\/span><\/p>\n

Leave the wound alone.<\/span> Do not rinse, do not suck, and do not check with your tongue. Avoid physical exertion, hot drinks, coffee, alcohol, and nicotine. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

04<\/span><\/p>\n

Cool from the outside.<\/span> Place a cool, damp cloth or a cloth-wrapped cold pack on the cheek \u2013 always with breaks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If bleeding continues after 30\u201360 minutes despite pressure<\/span> or if the bleeding becomes heavier, contact us or the emergency service.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Swelling<\/h3>\n

Often harmless after procedures \u2013 cooling helps.<\/p>\n

01<\/span><\/p>\n

Cool, cool, cool.<\/span> Wrap a cold pack or cold compresses in a cloth and apply alternately: cool for about 10 minutes, then a 10-minute break. Never apply ice directly to the skin. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

02<\/span><\/p>\n

Keep head elevated.<\/span> Sleep with your upper body elevated, even at night \u2013 this helps the swelling subside faster.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

03<\/span><\/p>\n

Avoid heat.<\/span> No sun, no sauna, no sports, no hot food or drinks \u2013 heat increases swelling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

04<\/span><\/p>\n

Observe.<\/span> Swelling after a procedure often peaks on the second or third day and then subsides.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Seek immediate medical help<\/span> for rapidly increasing swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing, or shortness of breath \u2013 if in doubt, call the emergency number 112.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
